Anyone out there have a good dye recipe for that old 1920's pearwood look? I'm building myself a 5-string neck for a 1925 Gibson TB-3 and I want to duplicate the aged look of the old veneer. The veneer on the tenor neck is thin about .035. I have a bunch of fresh pearwood to play with. I'm thinking about throwing some water-soluble dyes in the pressure cooker to start with... Louis |

Any chance you have a photo of the "old" aged pearwood? Maybe steamed pear will be close. |

This is steamed Swiss Pear, Louis. It's getting into the color shade and tone, but mostly the varnish or finish on the instrument (and the age patina) is giving it the darkness as you know. The maker might have started with steamed pear. ![]() |

Thanks Larry. I got some pearwood veneer from Constantine’s. In its raw form it looks a bit pink. I'm going to try dying some sample pieces with color tone and see how close I can get. I bet the right dye job will do it. It doesn’t have to look 80 years old, just close enough to show off at festivals and guitar shows and look "right". Thanks, Louis |
